v      Physical Education Program

The students at Sunnybank Hills State School are fortunate to have outstanding sporting equipment and facilities catering for physical education lessons, sport and outdoor education.

The Activity Centre provides an excellent learning and teaching environment that is particularly appreciated during the hot summer months and wet or windy days.

Year 1, 2 and 3 students are exposed to a variety of fundamental skills including batting and ball skills, movement and co-ordination activities presented in a circuit to maximise fun.  During the cooler months the children move outdoors to use the adventure playground and the oval to prepare for their Sports Day.

Year 4 students have a main focus on lead up games to major sports with an introduction to basic athletic techniques.

Year 5, 6 and 7 students’ physical education lessons are conducted in the hall during the summer months. Badminton, table tennis, netball, indoor soccer, ten pin bowling and handball are offered as group rotation activities providing variety and maximising space and equipment.

Athletic and Cross Country skills are the main focus for the cooler months.

v      House Competitions

·         Cross Country

Year 1 and 2 students incorporate the Cross Country into their Sports Day for Athletics.

Years 3 to 7 have a Cross Country Competition in Term 1.

·         Athletics

There are three Sports Days:

            Junior:               Years 1 and 2

            Intermediate:             Years 3 and 4

            Senior:              Years 5, 6 and 7

Junior and Intermediate sport days have an emphasis on participation. Intermediate
Sports Day incorporates High Jump and Long Jump as well as sprints.

Junior Sports is a fun day with novelty events as well as sprints ensuring a great day for all.

Senior Sports Day usually is preceded by a Field Events Day where the children compete in
High Jump, Long Jump, Discus and Shotput.  On Track Sports Day the competition focuses
on Sprints and Long Distance events (200m/800m) as well as relays, (shuttle and circular) and
ball games. In addition to the House Shield, awards are presented to the Age Champion Athletes.

Children who are the best athletes in each event then go on to represent the school in the

District Championships.  Sunnybank Hills is very proud of winning this event in previous years.

v      Swimming Years 3, 4 and 5 students have swimming instruction at Runcorn State School pool.
Three professional Swimming Coaches are employed to work with the classroom teacher to offer “Learn to Swim” and extension/fitness program.  Forty lessons are available during a two year period from Year 3 to Year 5.

School trials are conducted to select the fastest swimmers to represent the school in a District competition. Successful swimmers may qualify to participate in Regional, State and National titles.

v      Interschool Sports

In addition to the athletics program and advanced games skills, Years 5, 6 and 7 classes are offered numerous choices for Friday Intra and Inter-School Sport.  Summer sports include cricket, softball/teeball for girls and boys, tennis and A.F.L..  Winter sports include soccer, netball and basketball.

v      Camps

The Outdoor Education component of Physical Education is the part most students remember with great enthusiasm.

Year 4 students visit Underwater World for a sleepover in the tunnel coupled with a visit to the Caboolture Historical Village.

Year 5 students travel north towards Gympie to a fully catered camp with cabins. The facilities are excellent
with numerous pursuits to entertain students including abseiling and flying fox.

Year 6 students participate in a variety of cultural and artistic excursions and activities in the metropolitan area.

Year 7 Camp has always been held in beautiful Carnarvon Gorge.  In the weeks prior to the camp students learn about the flora and fauna of the area as well as the history.  Sleeping is in tents.  After sleeping with their peers for five nights we find most are challenged - particularly those who are fastidious.

v      After School Programs

From time to time opportunities arise for children to participate in extra programs on site. These are usually run by
outside organisations that hire our facilities.  During 2003 these included:
Basketball clinics, badminton, AFL, tennis, Speech & Drama, Dancing, Tae-Kwon-Do, Speed Soccer.

Information is usually advertised via the school newsletter or leaflet handouts.

 v      District and Regional Sports

Each year the District calls for children to “try out” for representative teams in various sports.  These usually include sports such as Softball, Rugby League, Soccer, Tennis, Basketball, Netball, Touch Football, A.F.L and Hockey.

Once selected, children are trained and then compete against other District teams for representation at Regional Level (Metropolitan West). From these competitions players are selected in Queensland State Teams to compete at the National Titles.  Our P & C usually contribute financial assistance to Regional and State Players who are from Sunnybank Hills State School.
