Assessment

Back to School Information Page HOME

Teachers utilise a range of assessment strategies to assist the learning and teaching processes.  All teachers use everyday observations, work samples and consultations to inform themselves of children’s understandings and progress.  This we call Formative Assessment.

In addition all teachers use various Tests and strategies they develop to assess skills, knowledge and understanding.  This is the basis of our Summative Assessment.  In all Year Levels some uniform Testing or Evaluation is conducted to assist in moderation of results.  This across year level evaluation may be in the form of a simple pen and paper test, a common checklist of observable skills or in the common development of Criteria for assessing the “Real or Authentic Task” for the Term.

v     Report Cards

School Reports are distributed at the end of each Semester.  Parent /Teacher Interviews are part of the process at the end of Semester 1 and are optional at the end of Semester 2.

Our School Report reflects the Curriculum of Sunnybank Hills.  The report details the results of assessment of Core Learnings,  Integrated Tasks and Attributes of Lifelong Learners.  Specialist Teachers also assess their subject areas in Music, LOTE and Physical Education.

v     System Wide Tests and Assessments

- Year 1 and 2 Diagnostic Continua

Education Queensland has provided schools with a Continua of Skills in Early Literacy and Numeracy.  This is in the format of a checklist that teacher in Years 1 and 2 mark off each child as they develop each skill in Reading, Writing and Numeracy.

In Year 2 a Statewide Validation Process assists schools to identify children “at risk” and appropriate Intervention Programs are implemented.

Parents are issued with a Report on their child’s progress on the Continua in Semester 2 of Year 1 and Semester 1 in Year 2.

- Year 3, 5 and 7 Literacy and Numeracy Tests

In late August each year all children in Years 3,5 and 7 are required to participate in the Statewide Testing Program.  Reading, Spelling, Writing and Mathematics are all included in these tests.

The Tests are marked externally to the school and an Individual Report on each student is issued later in the year to Parents and the Teacher.  In these Reports students are rated according to State Norms and Averages.

v   Specialised Assessments

- Guidance Officer assessments

From time to time more information is required on a student’s learning.  Guidance Officers are able to administer a range of Standardised Tests such as IQ Tests.

 - Ascertainment for Students with Disabilities

Students diagnosed as having an Intellectual, Visual, Hearing, Speech Language or Physical Impairment or have an Autistic Spectrum Disorder are ascertained for levels of need by Education Queensland processes.  These assessments involve Parents, Teachers and a range of personnel.  Placement of students into Units or appropriate setting is often part of this process.

- Appraisement

Students with Learning Disabilities or Difficulties are required to have their Level of need appraised. Programs utilising any available resources are then implemented.

v   Instrumental Music Assessment

The Teachers of Instrumental Programs issue Report Cards in Semester 1 and Semester 2.
